Right to Information Act, 2005
The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 empowers citizens to seek information from public authorities, making the government more transparent and accountable. The Department of Posts, being a public authority under the Ministry of Communications, is fully committed to implementing the RTI Act.
About the RTI Act
The RTI Act was enacted on 15 June 2005 and came into effect on 12 October 2005. It allows citizens to request information from any public authority, which is required to respond within 30 days. The Act aims to promote transparency and accountability in the working of public authorities.
How to File an RTI Application
- Identify the Information: Determine the specific information you need and the public authority (Department of Posts) that holds it.
- Write the Application: Write a simple application (in English, Hindi, or the official language of your state) clearly stating the information required.
- Pay the Fee: The application fee is Rs. 10 per request. Payment can be made via cash, demand draft, banker's cheque, or postal order payable to the concerned public authority.
- Submit the Application: Send your application to the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of the Department of Posts at the appropriate level (Headquarters, Circle, or Regional Office).
- Receive Information: The CPIO must respond within 30 days. For matters involving life or liberty, the response time is 48 hours.
