About Department of Posts

For more than 150 years, the Department of Posts (DoP) has been the backbone of the country's communication and has played a crucial role in the country's social economic development. It touches the lives of Indian citizens in many ways: delivering mails, accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance cover under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) and providing retail services like bill collection, sale of forms, etc.

The Department of Posts functions under the Ministry of Communications. The postal network in India is the largest in the world, with over 1.5 lakh post offices, of which more than 1.3 lakh are in rural areas. This vast network ensures that India Post reaches every corner of the country, making it an essential part of the nation's infrastructure.

Over the years, India Post has diversified its services to include banking, insurance, e-commerce, and digital services. The introduction of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has further strengthened the Department's commitment to financial inclusion.
